Tanzania Birding Overview
Tanzania's combination of ecosystems — coastal forest, savanna, highland forest, rift valley lakes, and offshore islands — produces extraordinary avian diversity. Over 1,100 species have been recorded nationally. The northern safari circuit, where most visitors spend their time, holds approximately 500 species across its parks and conservation areas.

Best Time for Birdwatching in Tanzania
November–April is the best period for total species count — European and Palearctic migrants arrive during Tanzania's wet season, adding over 200 species to the resident count. The Serengeti's long grass also flushes numerous grassland species during this period.
June–October (dry season) is better for general safari (visibility is higher, animals are concentrated) and residents are easier to spot without leaf cover. Migratory species are absent.
For birders specifically: November–April for maximum species diversity. For birders combining a general safari with birding: year-round is viable, with each season having distinct advantages.
