The same wildebeest herds, zebra, and predator populations move between both reserves throughout the year following rainfall and grass. The border between them is a line on a map, not a fence.

Our Honest Assessment
For most international travelers arriving in Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti is the obvious choice — it is in the same country, accessible from the same base (Moshi/Arusha), and can be combined with Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Zanzibar without leaving Tanzania. The logistics of crossing from Tanzania to Kenya for the Masai Mara and back adds complexity and cost without a proportionate gain in wildlife quality.
The Masai Mara makes the most sense if: you are based in Kenya and combining with Amboseli or the Kenya coast; you are specifically traveling in September–October when the herds are primarily on the Kenya side; or Kenya is your preferred entry point due to flight connections.
