Stone Town Overview
Stone Town (Mji Mkongwe in Swahili — "the old town") was the political, commercial, and cultural capital of the Omani Sultanate's East African empire from the 1830s until British colonial control in the late 19th century. The labyrinthine streets, coral stone buildings, carved wooden doors, and the blend of Arab, Indian, African, and European architectural influences reflect centuries of Indian Ocean trade that made Zanzibar one of the most important cities in the world during its peak. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

Where to Eat
Forodhani Night Market: The essential Zanzibar food experience. Fresh seafood grilled at stalls along the waterfront — Zanzibar mix (a local street food of cassava, lentils, and spices), grilled octopus, lobster, and sugarcane juice. Arrive at sunset and eat until the crowd thins. Extremely affordable.
Emerson Spice Rooftop Restaurant: The finest dining in Stone Town. Reservation required. Outstanding views over the old town rooftops. Multi-course Swahili cuisine. Budget $60–80 per person.
