Zanzibar's Reefs
Zanzibar sits at the edge of the Indian Ocean's warm equatorial water, surrounded by fringing reefs, patch reefs, and the offshore barrier of Mnemba Atoll. The reefs support exceptional marine biodiversity — over 370 species of fish, 140 coral species, and regular sightings of hawksbill and green turtles, whale sharks (seasonal), and reef sharks.
The best snorkeling is off the east and north coasts, where the reefs are shallow enough for surface snorkeling and the water is clear. The west coast of Zanzibar (facing the mainland) has more boat traffic and reduced visibility.
Mnemba Atoll
Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine reserve 5km off Zanzibar's northeast coast. The atoll — a circular coral formation surrounding a small private island — has the best reef condition and highest marine biodiversity in the Zanzibar archipelago. Visibility can reach 30m+ in optimal conditions. Resident populations include hawksbill turtles (commonly encountered), bottlenose and spinner dolphins, reef sharks (harmless whitetips), and abundant reef fish.
Snorkeling trips to Mnemba depart from Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast (30–45 min by boat) or from Matemwe on the east coast (15–20 min). Half-day trips typically include 2–3 snorkeling stops around the atoll, lunch, and return transfer.

Practical Tips
Best time: June–October gives the clearest water and calmest seas. December–February has occasional rain but reef conditions are still good. Avoid March–May (rough Indian Ocean swells reduce visibility).
Reef-safe sunscreen: Essential. Standard chemical sunscreens damage coral. Use mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) for all Zanzibar snorkeling.
Equipment: Fins, mask, and snorkel are provided on all organised trips. If you have a prescription mask, bring it.
