The snorkeling trip runs from beach hotels on the northeast coast (Nungwi or Matemwe area) by boat — approximately 20–30 minutes each way. You snorkel at two or three sites around the atoll with a guide in the water.

Mnemba is home to hawksbill turtles (common sightings), bottlenose and spinner dolphins, reef sharks, large schools of tropical fish, and extensive hard coral formations in good condition.

June to October is the main dry season with lower humidity and calm sea conditions, good for diving and water sports. December to February is also pleasant. Avoid April and May (main rainy season) when many water activities are disrupted.

Light, breathable clothing in modest styles for Stone Town where covering shoulders and knees is respectful in this predominantly Muslim community. Hawksbill turtles are among the most reliable sightings at Mnemba Atoll. While no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed, we see turtles on the vast majority of trips. The atoll is a nesting site and the turtles have become habituated to snorkelers.

Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine area and the reef is in better condition than most Zanzibar sites. Hard coral coverage is extensive. There is some bleaching evidence from previous warming events, but the diversity and health of the reef remains excellent relative to unprotected sites.

Boats typically depart 8:30am or 9am from the beach near your hotel. The full excursion (travel + snorkeling + travel back) is 4–5 hours.
