Zanzibar works well for families in ways that many beach destinations don't. The island is politically stable, the water is warm year-round, the main east and north coast beaches have gentle conditions suitable for children, and the cultural dimension — Stone Town, the spice farms, the dhow boats — gives older children and teenagers something to engage with beyond the pool. This guide covers what to expect, which beaches suit families best, and how to structure a family Zanzibar trip.
Why Zanzibar Works for Families
The practical reasons families do well in Zanzibar:
- Warm, calm water — the north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) is sheltered from the southeast trade winds and has calm swimming conditions year-round. The east coast lagoon at mid-to-high tide is ideal for young swimmers.
- Short travel time — from mainland Tanzania (Arusha, Kilimanjaro airport), Zanzibar is a 90-minute flight. No long-haul journey after an already-long international trip.
- No malaria medication required on the island — Zanzibar has near-eliminated malaria. Mainland Tanzania requires prophylaxis; Zanzibar generally does not, which simplifies the medication question for children.
- Food variety — Zanzibar's restaurant scene covers Swahili seafood, Indian-influenced dishes, and international menus. Hotels in tourist areas cater well to children with menu flexibility.
- Educational dimension — Stone Town's slave trade history, the Jozani Forest red colobus monkeys, and the spice farm tours provide content that engages curious older children differently from a standard beach holiday.
Best Beaches for Families
Nungwi (North Coast)
Nungwi is the most developed beach on Zanzibar and the most practical for families who want amenities nearby. The beach itself is wide and sandy with calm water. At Nungwi, there's no significant tidal variation in swimming conditions — the beach is swimmable morning and afternoon regardless of the tide, which matters with children who want to swim when they want to swim rather than waiting for the right tide.
The Nungwi Natural Aquarium — a small natural tidal pool that houses sea turtles — is a short walk from the main beach area and genuinely thrilling for children aged 4 and up.
Kendwa (North Coast)
A short walk south from Nungwi, Kendwa is quieter with the same calm water. Some families prefer it because the beach bar scene is slightly less intense than Nungwi. Good for families who want a beach day with less surrounding activity.
East Coast (Paje, Jambiani) — Age Dependent
The east coast lagoon is spectacular at the right tide but requires attention. At low tide, the water retreats far out and the lagoon floor is exposed — fun for children to explore, but swimming is not possible. At high tide, the water is beautiful and swimmable. For families with children who are comfortable with this rhythm (it varies significantly through the day), the east coast delivers the most photogenic Zanzibar beach experience.
Kite surfing is centered on Paje, which makes the beach exciting for teenagers interested in watersports and easy to watch from the shore.
Family-Friendly Activities in Zanzibar
Jozani Forest — Red Colobus Monkeys
The Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park on Zanzibar's central island is home to the Zanzibar red colobus, a subspecies found nowhere else in the world. The monkeys are semi-habituated to tourists and can be approached to within a few metres on guided walks through the forest. For most children, this is the highlight of the entire Zanzibar visit — seeing wild primates at close range in their natural habitat is a different experience from any zoo.
The forest also has a mangrove boardwalk and reasonable birdwatching. Half-day excursion from any beach on the island.
Stone Town Cultural Walk
Stone Town is well-suited to families with children aged 8 and over. The carved wooden doors, the historic slave market, the spice market at Darajani, and the waterfront Forodhani Night Market (especially the evening market with its fresh seafood cooked to order) all provide genuine engagement. Younger children do less well with the 3–4 hour walking tour duration but can manage a shorter half-day circuit.
The slave market and Anglican Cathedral have historical content that requires some parental framing for younger children — the chamber where enslaved people were held before auction is visceral rather than educational for a 6-year-old. Worth seeing, but worth thinking about how you'll contextualise it.
Spice Farm Tour
The spice farm tours in Zanzibar's central highlands are among the most child-friendly excursions on the island. You walk through a working farm, touching, smelling, and tasting fresh cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, and a dozen tropical fruits. Children who are otherwise indifferent to cultural tourism consistently enjoy this because it's hands-on and sensory. Traditional lunch at the farm is included on most tours.
Snorkeling
Children aged 7 and over who can swim can snorkel. The reef at Mnemba Atoll — a 20-minute boat ride from Matemwe on the northeast coast — offers hawksbill turtle encounters with high reliability. Most children find their first turtle encounter underwater one of the most memorable moments of a Tanzania trip. Snorkeling equipment is provided on all excursions.
What to Know About Zanzibar with Young Children
- Sun protection — equatorial sun at sea level is significantly stronger than what most visitors are used to. SPF 50+ every 2 hours without fail. Rash vests for children in the water.
- Food and water — drink bottled water only. Mid-range and above hotel restaurants are generally safe. Street food at the Forodhani Night Market is well-trafficked and reliably fresh, but introduce it gradually for sensitive stomachs.
- Modest clothing in Stone Town — Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. In Stone Town and local villages, cover shoulders and knees out of respect. On the beach, normal swimwear is fine. Pack a light wrap for children as well.
- Minimum age for snorkeling — 7 years, able to swim confidently in open water.
- Accommodation — most hotels in tourist beach areas offer family rooms, interconnecting rooms, or will set up extra beds. State the ages of your children when booking; we factor this into accommodation selection.
Best Time for a Family Zanzibar Trip
July to October is the main dry season with the most stable weather, calmest seas, and best diving and snorkeling conditions. This period aligns naturally with the European and North American school summer holidays, which is convenient and makes it the most visited season. December to February is also excellent — warm, less humid, good swimming. Avoid April–May (main rainy season) with young children.
Combining Zanzibar with a Family Safari
The combination of a 4–5 day family safari in the northern parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) followed by 3–5 days in Zanzibar is the most popular Tanzania family itinerary we build. The safari provides the wildlife experience; Zanzibar provides recovery, beach time, and different sensory engagement. Internal flights between the mainland and Zanzibar are short (90 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport) and we handle all logistics.
