What Is Acclimatization?
At sea level, atmospheric oxygen is sufficient for normal physiological function. As you ascend, atmospheric pressure drops and the partial pressure of oxygen decreases — meaning each breath delivers less oxygen to your lungs and bloodstream. Your body responds by producing more red blood cells to carry oxygen more efficiently, increasing breathing rate, and shifting fluid distribution. This process takes time — typically 2–4 days for meaningful adaptation at any given elevation.
When ascent happens faster than the body can adapt, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) results. AMS is not caused by fitness level, age, or prior altitude experience — it affects everyone unpredictably. What mitigates it is time: slower ascent profiles and acclimatization rest days.
Climb High, Sleep Low
The most effective acclimatization principle for trekking at altitude. During an acclimatization day, you hike to a significantly higher elevation (gaining 400–600m above your sleeping altitude), spend 2–3 hours at that height, and return to sleep at the lower camp. This triggers the physiological adaptations of higher altitude while giving your body the lower-altitude conditions needed for better sleep and recovery.
On the Machame Route, the Day 3 hike from Shira Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,642m) and back down to Barranco Camp (3,976m) is the built-in "climb high, sleep low" day. It provides acclimatization to the 4,600m range — close to Kibo Hut elevation — while sleeping at under 4,000m. This is widely credited as one of the main reasons the Machame has a significantly higher summit rate than the Marangu.

If maximising summit success rate is your priority, choose Machame or Lemosho. If the combination (Kilimanjaro + safari + Zanzibar) is the goal and 2 extra days aren't available, the Marangu with its 6-day option is a reasonable choice. How We Monitor Acclimatization
Our guides carry pulse oximeters (blood oxygen saturation meters) and take readings from every climber every morning and evening from Day 2 onward. Normal blood oxygen saturation at sea level is 95–100%. At altitude, readings of 75–85% are common and manageable. Below 70% with symptoms warrants a serious conversation about descent.
We also monitor for the combination of symptoms that signal deteriorating AMS: persistent headache, nausea, loss of appetite, and disturbed sleep. These are expected to some degree — the judgment call is whether they are worsening despite adequate hydration and rest, or stabilizing. Diamox (Acetazolamide) — The Honest Facts
Diamox (acetazolamide) is a prescription drug that stimulates breathing rate and mildly accelerates acclimatization. It is commonly taken by Kilimanjaro climbers as a preventive measure. Our position:
Diamox works. Randomised controlled trials confirm it reduces AMS incidence when taken prophylactically (starting 1–2 days before ascent, typically 125–250mg twice daily). It has common side effects: tingling in fingers and toes (very common, harmless), increased urination, and occasionally altered taste of carbonated drinks. It is a sulfa drug — people with sulfa allergies should not take it.
We do not require or recommend Diamox for all climbers. We recommend consulting your GP or travel physician before departure. Diamox is a tool — it does not replace proper acclimatization through route selection and pacing.
