The route itself — the Whiskey Route through five ecological zones — is unchanged. The difference is in how you arrive at Barafu Camp: warm, well-fed, and with enough energy reserved for summit night.

Luxury camps on Kilimanjaro don't have running hot water or electricity at most sites, but our setup is as comfortable as the mountain environment allows — solar lighting, hot water bottles on request, and a warm meal waiting after every day's walking.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 7-Day Luxury Machame Route

Day0

Arrival in Moshi, Tanzania

900m elevation Moshi lodge

Our driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport — about 45 minutes by road to your lodge. In the evening your lead guide briefs you on the route, checks your gear, and answers your questions. Early night recommended.

Day1

Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (2,835m)

11 km 5–7 hours +1,035m

Registration at Machame Gate, then into the montane rainforest. Dense vegetation, colobus monkeys in the canopy, and steady climbing until the forest opens onto Machame Camp with first views of the upper mountain.

Day2

Machame Camp → Shira Camp (3,847m)

5 km 4–6 hours +1,012m

Heather and moorland replace the trees as you gain altitude quickly. A steep ridge reveals the Kenyan plains to the north. The Shira Plateau — an ancient caldera — stretches in every direction from camp.

Day3

Shira Camp → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,976m)

10 km 6–8 hours +783m / −654m

The acclimatization day. You climb to Lava Tower (higher than any Alpine peak), have lunch, then descend to Barranco. Your body gains altitude exposure without sleeping at peak elevation — this day directly improves your summit chances.

Day4

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (3,995m)

5 km 4–5 hours +19m net

The Barranco Wall — a 300m near-vertical scramble — looks formidable from below but is manageable for prepared hikers. Your guide leads; porters follow. The view from the top rewards every handhold.

Day5

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

4 km 3–4 hours +678m

Short but demanding half-day through alpine desert. Arrive early afternoon, eat well, and rest from 7pm. Your guide wakes you between midnight and 1am for the summit attempt.

Day6

Barafu → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

17 km 10–14 hours total +1,222m / −2,795m

Summit push in darkness. Steady pole pole pace up the zigzag trail. Stella Point (5,756m) arrives first at crater rim; Uhuru Peak is another 45–60 minutes along the rim. Sunrise above the clouds. Descent all the way to Mweka Camp.

Day7

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate (1,640m) → Moshi

10 km 3–4 hours −1,460m

Final descent through the rainforest. At Mweka Gate: TANAPA certificate, porter tips, vehicle back to Moshi. Hot shower and first real meal in a week.

How to Prepare for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Build aerobic fitness through running, cycling, or swimming for 3-4 sessions per week. Add weighted hiking weekly, working up to a 10-12 kg pack over 15+ km with significant elevation gain. Complete at least two multi-day hiking trips before your climb.

Essential Gear

Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots are the most critical item. Your layering system needs a moisture-wicking base layer, warm mid-layer (fleece or down), and waterproof outer shell. Bring a warm hat and gloves rated to -20C. Trekking poles significantly reduce knee strain on long descents.

Health and Medication

Consult your doctor before booking if you have heart or respiratory conditions. Many doctors recommend discussing acetazolamide (Diamox) as an altitude prevention measure. Yellow fever vaccination required from endemic countries. Malaria prophylaxis recommended for time spent at lower elevations.
