Day-by-Day Itinerary: 9-Day Luxury Northern Circuit

Same route as the standard Northern Circuit — significantly upgraded experience at every camp.

Arrival in Moshi

900m Moshi lodge

Transfer and evening briefing. The Northern Circuit is the longest route — your guide will walk you through the full nine-day plan.

Day1

Londorossi Gate (2,100m) → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)

7 km 3–4 hours +550m

Remote western start through montane forest. Quiet and well-forested.

Day2

Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

8 km 5–6 hours +850m

Forest to moorland transition. First views of the summit as you reach the Shira Plateau.

Day3

Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

7 km 4–5 hours +350m

Across the Shira Plateau with open views in every direction.

Day4

Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Third Cave Camp (3,800m)

11 km 7–9 hours +780m / −830m

Acclimatization day. Climb to Lava Tower for lunch, then the Northern Circuit diverges from Lemosho — heading north and west around the mountain rather than descending to Barranco. Third Cave Camp is on the remote northern face.

Third Cave → School Hut Area / Moir Hut (4,200m)

10 km 5–7 hours +400m

The heart of the Northern Circuit — traversing the northern face with almost no other trekkers. Dramatic views of the northern ice fields and the Kenyan plains far below.

Day6

Moir Hut → Outward Bound Hut Area (4,050m)

11 km 6–8 hours −150m

Continuing the traverse around the northern face. The landscape here is unlike anything on the southern routes — remote, stark, and frequently visited only by Northern Circuit groups.

Day7

Outward Bound → Kibo Hut Approach → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

9 km 5–6 hours +623m

The northern traverse ends as the route approaches the summit cone from the east. Barafu Camp — base for the summit push.

Day8

Barafu → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

17 km 10–14 hours +1,222m / −2,795m

Summit night from midnight. Pole pole to Stella Point then Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Long descent to Mweka Camp.

Day9

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

10 km 3–4 hours −1,460m

Final descent through the rainforest. TANAPA certificate, porter tips, vehicle to Moshi.

How to Prepare for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Physical Training (3-6 Months Before)

Build aerobic fitness through running, cycling, or swimming for 3-4 sessions per week. Add weighted hiking weekly, working up to a 10-12 kg pack over 15+ km with significant elevation gain. Complete at least two multi-day hiking trips before your climb.

Essential Gear

Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots are the most critical item. Your layering system needs a moisture-wicking base layer, warm mid-layer (fleece or down), and waterproof outer shell. Bring a warm hat and gloves rated to -20C. Trekking poles significantly reduce knee strain on long descents.

Health and Medication

Consult your doctor before booking if you have heart or respiratory conditions. Many doctors recommend discussing acetazolamide (Diamox) as an altitude prevention measure. Yellow fever vaccination required from endemic countries. Malaria prophylaxis recommended for time spent at lower elevations.

Our guides monitor oxygen saturation twice daily with pulse oximeters. Mild symptoms — headache, fatigue, reduced appetite — are common above 3,000m and don't require action beyond slowing pace and hydrating. Serious symptoms — confusion, loss of coordination, extreme breathlessness at rest — mean descent. We carry supplemental oxygen for summit day emergencies. Your safety always comes before the summit.

January to mid-March and late June to October are the most reliable months. January-February is warm and relatively dry with fresh summit snow. June-October offers cooler temperatures and best visibility. Avoid April, May, and November-December during Tanzania's main rainy seasons.
