Day-by-Day Itinerary: 8-Day Luxury Lemosho Route

Arrival in Moshi

900m Moshi lodge

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your lodge in Moshi. Evening briefing with your lead guide — gear check, route overview, safety protocols.

Day1

Londorossi Gate (2,100m) → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)

7 km 3–4 hours +550m

Drive to Londorossi Gate — more remote than Machame, already quieter. The first hours are in dense montane forest. Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp is in the forest at 2,650m — a gentle opening day.

Day2

Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

8 km 5–6 hours +850m

The forest gradually gives way to moorland. Long views open as you gain the Shira Plateau. Shira 1 Camp is the first of two camps on this plateau — more spacious and less trafficked than the Machame approach.

Day3

Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

7 km 4–5 hours +350m

A shorter day across the Shira Plateau with excellent views of the summit cone to the east. The plateau itself is a highlight — vast, lunar landscape at high altitude.

Day4

Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,976m)

10 km 7–9 hours +780m / −654m

The critical acclimatization day. Climb to Lava Tower at 4,630m, rest and have lunch, then descend to Barranco. The altitude exposure without overnight at that height measurably improves summit performance.

Day5

Barranco → Karanga Camp (3,995m)

5 km 4–5 hours +19m net

Barranco Wall at the start — a 300m hands-on scramble with outstanding views from the top. Then ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, quieter and less crowded than the main mountain traffic.

Day6

Karanga → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

4 km 3–4 hours +678m

Half day to base camp. Arrive early, eat well, rest. Your guide wakes you between midnight and 1am for summit.

Day7

Barafu → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

17 km 10–14 hours +1,222m / −2,795m

Summit night in darkness. Pole pole to Stella Point, then Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Descent the entire way to Mweka Camp for a well-earned final night on the mountain.

Day8

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

10 km 3–4 hours −1,460m

Final descent through rainforest. TANAPA certificate at the gate. Vehicle back to Moshi.

How to Prepare for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Physical Training (3-6 Months Before)

Build aerobic fitness through running, cycling, or swimming for 3-4 sessions per week. Add weighted hiking weekly, working up to a 10-12 kg pack over 15+ km with significant elevation gain. Complete at least two multi-day hiking trips before your climb.

Essential Gear

Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots are the most critical item. Your layering system needs a moisture-wicking base layer, warm mid-layer (fleece or down), and waterproof outer shell. Bring a warm hat and gloves rated to -20C. Trekking poles significantly reduce knee strain on long descents.

Health and Medication

Consult your doctor before booking if you have heart or respiratory conditions. Many doctors recommend discussing acetazolamide (Diamox) as an altitude prevention measure. Yellow fever vaccination required from endemic countries. Malaria prophylaxis recommended for time spent at lower elevations.
