Arrival in Moshi

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Evening briefing, gear check, route overview with your guide.

Day1

Rongai Gate (1,950m) → First Cave Camp (2,600m)

9 km 4–5 hours +650m

Drive to Rongai Gate on the northern (Kenyan) side of the mountain — quieter than southern approaches. The forest on the north side is different: drier, with open glades. First Cave Camp is in open moorland.

Day2

First Cave → Second Cave (3,450m)

9 km 5–6 hours +850m

The northern moorland continues, increasingly open and stark. Views of Kenya's Amboseli plains to the north. Second Cave Camp is more exposed but with dramatic views of the summit above.

Day3

Second Cave → Kikelewa Camp (3,630m)

9 km 4–5 hours +180m

A shorter acclimatization day traversing the moorland below the summit cone. Kikelewa Camp is one of the least-trafficked camps on the mountain — often just your group here.

Day4

Kikelewa → Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

4 km 4–5 hours +700m

Short but steep ascent to Mawenzi Tarn — a remote lake below the Mawenzi towers. The scenery here is unlike anything on other routes: volcanic rock spires and a moonscape landscape. Highest camp before summit — rest well.

Day5

Mawenzi Tarn → Kibo Hut (4,703m) → Summit (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

23 km 14–18 hours total +1,565m / −2,175m

A massive day. Cross the alpine saddle to Kibo Hut in the morning, rest briefly, then summit at midnight. Scree and lava to Gilman's Point, then crater rim to Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Descent to Horombo Hut.

Day6

Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi

20 km 6–7 hours −1,890m

Long descent through moorland and forest back to Marangu Gate (Rongai descends via Marangu). TANAPA certificate, porter tips, vehicle to Moshi.

How to Prepare for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Physical Training (3-6 Months Before)

Build aerobic fitness through running, cycling, or swimming for 3-4 sessions per week. Add weighted hiking weekly, working up to a 10-12 kg pack over 15+ km with significant elevation gain. Complete at least two multi-day hiking trips before your climb.

Essential Gear

Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots are the most critical item. Your layering system needs a moisture-wicking base layer, warm mid-layer (fleece or down), and waterproof outer shell. Bring a warm hat and gloves rated to -20C. Trekking poles significantly reduce knee strain on long descents.

Health and Medication

Consult your doctor before booking if you have heart or respiratory conditions. Many doctors recommend discussing acetazolamide (Diamox) as an altitude prevention measure. Yellow fever vaccination required from endemic countries. Malaria prophylaxis recommended for time spent at lower elevations.

Our guides monitor oxygen saturation twice daily with pulse oximeters. Mild symptoms — headache, fatigue, reduced appetite — are common above 3,000m and don't require action beyond slowing pace and hydrating. Serious symptoms — confusion, loss of coordination, extreme breathlessness at rest — mean descent. We carry supplemental oxygen for summit day emergencies. Your safety always comes before the summit.

January to mid-March and late June to October are the most reliable months. January-February is warm and relatively dry with fresh summit snow. June-October offers cooler temperatures and best visibility. Avoid April, May, and November-December during Tanzania's main rainy seasons.
