Moshi Overview
Moshi (population approximately 185,000) sits at 895m elevation in the Kilimanjaro Region of northern Tanzania. On clear days — most often in the early morning before cloud builds — the full profile of Kilimanjaro is visible from the town. The town is small, walkable in the centre, and oriented primarily around the Kilimanjaro climbing industry. The main street (Mawenzi Road and its surroundings) has equipment shops, tour operators, restaurants, and accommodation within a compact radius.
Moshi is distinctly different from Arusha — smaller, quieter, with a more local character. Many climbers find it more pleasant than Arusha as a pre-climb base. The elevation (895m) provides a mild climate year-round — warm days, cooler evenings — and the agricultural surroundings (coffee and banana plantations) are visible from the town outskirts.
Getting There
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is 45 minutes from Moshi by road. We meet all arriving clients at the airport and transfer to their Moshi hotel included in the package. Shared shuttle buses from Nairobi and Dar es Salaam are available (5–6 hours from Nairobi; 7–8 hours from Dar).
