Six-day private Marangu Route climb with hut accommodation throughout — the classic Kilimanjaro trek with an extra acclimatization night, from $1,900.

The trade-off is speed. Marangu's 6-day profile climbs the mountain on the same route both up and down, with fewer nights for acclimatization than Machame or Lemosho. This directly affects summit success: our Marangu rate is 70–75% vs 85–90% on 7-day Machame. It is not a route to choose for budget reasons alone.

It is, however, a good option for those who prefer the physical comfort of huts over camping, and for travelers with limited time who accept the lower success probability in exchange for convenience.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 6-Day Private Marangu Route

Arrival in Moshi

900m Moshi lodge

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Evening gear check and briefing with your lead guide.

Day1

Marangu Gate (1,830m) → Mandara Hut (2,720m)

8 km 3–4 hours +890m

Registration at Marangu Gate, then through dense montane rainforest on a well-maintained trail. Mandara Hut is the first set of A-frame huts — basic but comfortable, with dormitory bunks.

Day2

Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

12 km 6–8 hours +1,000m

The forest thins to moorland, then alpine desert as you gain altitude steadily. Horombo Hut offers the first clear views of Mawenzi — the second summit of Kilimanjaro — to the east.

Day3

Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut (4,703m)

15 km 6–8 hours +983m

A long crossing of the alpine saddle — an exposed plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo. Kibo Hut sits directly below the summit cone. Eat dinner early and rest until midnight for the summit push.

Day4

Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

22 km 12–16 hours total +1,192m / −2,175m

Summit night starts at midnight. Scree slopes to Gilman's Point on the crater rim (5,681m), then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descent all the way back to Horombo Hut — a long day.

Day5

Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi

20 km 6–7 hours −1,890m

The final long descent back through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate. TANAPA summit certificate. Vehicle to Moshi.

How to Prepare for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Physical Training (3-6 Months Before)

Build aerobic fitness through running, cycling, or swimming for 3-4 sessions per week. Add weighted hiking weekly, working up to a 10-12 kg pack over 15+ km with significant elevation gain. Complete at least two multi-day hiking trips before your climb.

Essential Gear

Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots are the most critical item. Your layering system needs a moisture-wicking base layer, warm mid-layer (fleece or down), and waterproof outer shell. Bring a warm hat and gloves rated to -20C. Trekking poles significantly reduce knee strain on long descents.

Health and Medication

Consult your doctor before booking if you have heart or respiratory conditions. Many doctors recommend discussing acetazolamide (Diamox) as an altitude prevention measure. Yellow fever vaccination required from endemic countries. Malaria prophylaxis recommended for time spent at lower elevations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marangu's 6-day itinerary allows less acclimatization time. There is no "climb high, sleep low" day built in — the route ascends the same trail up and down, and the altitude gain per day is faster. Machame's 7-day profile with its dedicated acclimatization day consistently produces better results. If your primary goal is reaching Uhuru Peak, we recommend Machame or Lemosho.

Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts are dormitory-style A-frame structures with basic bunk beds. They provide more weather protection than tents but do not have individual rooms or hot water. Mattresses are provided; bring your own sleeping bag or rent one in Moshi. Kibo Hut has no electricity and limited toilet facilities.

Yes — you can add an extra acclimatization night at Horombo Hut, which we recommend if you have flexibility. This extends the itinerary to 7 days and meaningfully improves your summit chances. Ask us about the 7-day Marangu option.
