Kizimkazi is about 50 minutes by road from Stone Town and most beach hotels. The dolphin encounter is in the wild, open ocean — not a performance. You enter the water and the dolphins swim freely around you at their own choice.

The afternoon dhow cruise covers the southwest coastline as the sun drops, with cocktails and traditional Swahili snacks served on board.

What to Expect

Morning Timing

Depart 6:30–7am for the dolphin swim when conditions are calmest. Dolphin activity is highest in the morning.

Dolphin Encounter

The dolphins cannot be guaranteed — they are wild animals. However, Kizimkazi has resident pods and success rates are high. On most trips, dolphins are encountered within 30 minutes of departure.

Conservation Note

Operators at Kizimkazi are monitored. We use responsible operators who do not chase or harass the dolphins and maintain distance when animals are feeding or resting.

Practical Information

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

June to October is the main dry season with lower humidity and calm sea conditions, good for diving and water sports. December to February is also pleasant. Avoid April and May (main rainy season) when many water activities are disrupted.

What to Bring

Light, breathable clothing in modest styles for Stone Town where covering shoulders and knees is respectful in this predominantly Muslim community. Swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen for beach and water activities. Cash in USD or Tanzanian shillings is useful as card acceptance is limited outside hotels.

Responsible dolphin swimming at Kizimkazi has operated for decades and uses protocols designed to minimize disturbance: limited time per pod, no chasing, no feeding. The dolphins are not trained or captive — they choose to interact with swimmers. We use operators who adhere to these guidelines.

On most days, dolphins are encountered. If dolphins are not found within the allocated search time, the morning is used for snorkeling at a nearby reef. No refund is available for missed dolphin sightings — this is a wildlife encounter with inherent unpredictability.

About 50 minutes by road from Stone Town and most east-coast beach hotels. We arrange transfers from your hotel pickup.

Children 8 and over who can swim are welcome. Children under 8 can ride on the boat but may not enter the water for the dolphin swim.
