Tanzania's dry seasons — late June to October and January to February — provide the best overall conditions. Vegetation is thinner, animals concentrate around water, and the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings peak July to September. The wet seasons bring lower prices and fewer visitors but more challenging roads.

Health Requirements

Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country and recommended regardless. Malaria prophylaxis is advisable for all mainland Tanzania. Consult a travel health clinic at least four to six weeks before departure.

What to Bring

Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, tan) is standard on safari. Bright colours attract insects. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, and binoculars (8x magnification minimum). A headlamp is useful for early morning departures.

Nine days is the most comprehensive single-trip Migration itinerary we offer. Six days in the Serengeti — five in the north — gives you a very high probability of witnessing river crossings during Jul-Oct. No itinerary can guarantee crossings, but this structure maximizes the odds.

Yes. Many travelers add Kilimanjaro before the safari (7-day climb followed by this 9-day itinerary) or fly to Zanzibar for beach recovery after. We build custom packages around your full itinerary.

With five days near the Mara River during Jul-Oct, most groups see at least one crossing. If the herds are on the Kenyan side, we track them from the Tanzanian bank. If crossings are quiet, your guide focuses on the exceptional predator activity that accompanies the Migration — lion hunts and cheetah chases are consistently high during this period.

Calving happens January-February in the southern Serengeti. Approximately 400,000 wildebeest are born in 3 weeks — a different kind of spectacle. We can adapt this itinerary for calving season on request.
